A check with Asst.Supt. Scroggs provides the following information:
2003-2004 census
Schools Membership Walk Zone Bus Car Walk/Bike
SCROGGS 657 353 236 152 269
MCD ES 612 297 163 269 123
EPHESUS 445 180 139 240 57
So clearly, when a school is constructed adjoining a neighborhood, with
sidewalks leading to it, and with a walkzone which is safe for children,
anywhere from 1/4 up to 2/3 of the children who could walk, WILL walk. This
could still be the case for Twin Creeks if the eastern location is found to
be feasible for an ES. I hope the BOCC will encourage and fund consideration
of this approach, this time including the school board in the planning.
The other ES/MS in the CHCCS have so few children in a walkzone that they
are irrelevant, except as examples of what happens when the relationships
between family location and civic facilities are ignored.
